The settlement of Gastown grew around a logging sawmill established in 1867, expanding gradually to become the town of Granville. It was renamed "Vancouver" and incorporated as a city in 1886. Like all of our schools, The Aveda Institute and Academy Vancouver is located in a beautiful historic building in a bustling city center.

While forestry remains its largest industry, Vancouver is well known as an urban hot-spot surrounded by nature, making it a great place to live. Because of its charm and proximity to the natural beauty of British Columbia tourism is its second-largest industry. Major film production studios in Vancouver and Burnaby have turned Vancouver into the third-largest film production center in North America after Hollywood and New York, earning it the film industry nickname, "Hollywood North".

Vancouver was also the first city to place among the top-ten of “The World's Most Livable Cities” for five years in a row.

The 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics were held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler, a resort community just 125 km north of the city. The parks and beaches are amazing, the nightlife is exciting and the opportunities are endless.
